***************************
He was beginning to regret having ever bought that bloody car. It had had
more problems since he bought it, then any other car he'd previously owned.
Tonight had been the worst, though. A flat tire would have been welcomed. No, this
time the car had just completely died. No warnings at all and it had half a
tank left of gas in it. He'd been driving it towards home one second and the
next, it had just pooped out on him.
Rupert Giles, 45, had only lived in Sunnydale for the past four years. He had
a respectable teaching job at the local university. He had a few close
friends in town. He owned a modest three bedroom, one bathroom house near where he
worked. He even did a night or two a week, playing guitar and singing at The
Espresso Pump. Yet Rupert Giles was too worked up at the moment, to care about
anything but that contemptible car. He'd acquired the car, six months ago and
it had given him nothing but grief, ever since.
Now the car was sitting on the side of the road someplace, and Rupert was
walking home. Cursing under his breath, in a variety of languages, about stupid
cars and stupider car owners. He was around twenty minutes from home, when he
heard a growling noise from somewhere behind him. At least he thought it was
from behind him. Before he had the chance to turn around and find out where the
noise was coming from, Rupert was grabbed from behind and dragged into an
alley.
"Well, well. Lookit what I found, boys. Dinner is served and he sure looks
tasty!," one vampire exclaimed, licking its' lips.
Rupert wondered what was going on, then noticed that he was surrounded.
Three, no, four vampires had formed a circle around him.
"What's going on? Who are you?" Rupert asked nervously. Then gasped as one
by one, their faces changed. One of them, the leader, he supposed, closed in
on him and grinned. He grabbed Rupert and wrapped one arm around Rupert's
waist. Then used the other one, to pull Rupert's head back.
Rupert gulped and prepared to face the end, and just as the vampire leaned
his face into Rupert's neck, game face on, the vampire was suddenly gone. Rupert
opened his eyes as one of the remaining vampires cried, "Slayer!! Get her!!".
Slayer? What was that? Blinking a couple of times, didn't make things any
clearer for Rupert. He watched as the vampires were going "poof" right before his
eyes. Who or what, was that small child? Surely the child couldn't be
responsible for the vampires, if that's what they really were, demise? Vampires
weren't real...right? If not, then those things that had grabbed him, were very
good imitations. Very lifelike and realistic, even.
When the vampires(or whatever they were), had vanished completely, the child,
who upon closer inspection, was actually a young woman, stood in the empty
alley. She put her vampire killing thing away and walked up to Rupert.
"Are you okay, Mister?" she asked, giving him a quick glance to check for any
visible injuries.
"I-I'm fine, Miss. But what *were* those things?" Rupert answered.
The woman smiled and said, "What things do you mean?". Rupert frowned. He
hadn't been imagining things, least of all, those...creatures. No one could be
stupid enough to imagine anything that fearsome. At least no one sane.
"Look, I'll walk you home and tell you that nothing happened in this alley
tonight. At least nothing that's worth remembering. Just remember a couple of
things, should anything like this "not" happen again. Number one, *never* go
outside after dark, unless you don't have a choice. And number two, *never*
invite anyone inside your house after dark. *Especially* people you don't know.
Heck, just to be extra safe, don't even invite people you know, into your house
after dark."
Rupert nodded, still confused about the blonde woman beside him, and the
creatures that she'd gotten rid of. When he and the woman had reached his front
door, she waited patiently as he found his house keys and unlocked the door.
Before she left though, he just *had* to know more. Even if she told him nothing
more than her name. Certainly she wouldn't object to him knowing?
"Uh, Miss...if you won't tell me anything more about those...creatures from
the alley, then perhaps you could tell me your name?" he hopefully asked.
"My name? First get inside your house, then I'll tell you." she urged.
Rupert walked into the house and then turned back around to face the woman
again. Much to his frustration, however, the woman had vanished. He cursed a
blue streak, then closed and locked his front door. One thing was for certain,
life in the sleepy town of Sunnydale, had just gotten a bit more interesting.
THE END(For Now??)
