"Willow, will you please go upstairs and let Buffy know that dinner's
ready?" Giles questioned, smiling warmly at the redheaded Wicca.
"Sure, Giles! Be right back." She grinned back at him, then left the
kitchen and ran upstairs to Buffy and Angel's rooms.
When she got there, she rapped her knuckles lightly on the door and
waited. After a few seconds, Willow knocked again, but nobody came to
the door. That was weird. She opened the door a crack and stuck her
head into the room.
"Buffy?" Willow asked, then waited for a response. "Buffy, are you in
here?" Seeing that the room was empty, she frowned, then turned to
leave. When she got back downstairs, she joined the others in the
kitchen at the table. Giles gave her a curious look, then seemed
mildly concerned when she shook her head.
Cordy, Doyle, Wes, Fred, and Angel, along with Giles, Willow, and
Tara, all grabbed a plate and took turns piling food onto them. And
after a brief prayer of thanks for the food, they all started eating.
Well, all except for Angel, who didn't eat normal food much. He noted
that Buffy wasn't there with everyone else and wondered where she
could be. He politely excused himself, then went up to their rooms to
investigate. But he didn't see her anywhere, so after checking the
other places in the hotel that she could be, without finding her, he
sat down on the circular couch in the lobby to think.
He didn't know where she would've gone and he didn't know why she'd
have even gone anywhere. At least not without telling someone first.
Buffy had never just up and left the hotel without any notice, and
she'd been living at the Hyperion for five years now. Angel sighed,
then grabbed his keys and left the hotel to look for her. He hoped she
was okay.
*****
The sound of the waves crashing against the shore, was so soothing.
The sand she sat on, was soft and yet firm enough to hold her tightly.
Buffy grabbed a handful of the sand next to her and watched it flow
through her fingers. It was cool to the touch. Whenever she got
overwhelmed with stuff, or just wanted to get away from everything and
be alone, she'd come to the beach. Her shoes sat next to her backpack
purse by her feet, and her cellphone was in the outside pocket. It was
on vibrate because she didn't want to be disturbed right now. Buffy
just wanted to breathe.
She'd been really tense lately but wasn't exactly sure why. And she
wanted to know why, before discussing it with anyone. Her birthday had
been last month. The big 2-0. Angel and the others had thrown her a
huge bash, like every year since she'd come to live with them all. But
once she and Angel had been alone in their bed, he'd given her a
special "I love you and only you" kind of birthday present. A ring. A
diamond ring, to be more exact. He'd pulled her to him after they'd
recovered from their lovemaking and had handed her a small black
velvet box.
Buffy had taken the box from him and given him a "is this what I
*think* this is" kind of look, to which Angel had nodded shyly. She'd
opened the box and gasped at the ring inside. It was stunning. He
wanted to marry her? Wow. So much had happened to her during her
lifetime, both good and bad. And now this wonderfully amazing man,
wanted Buffy for his wife. She loved Angel more than she'd ever
thought she could love *anyone*, especially after the hell she'd gone
through when she was still living with Hank.
Lost in her musings, she almost missed the buzzing coming from her
phone. Buffy groaned, then grabbed the offensive thing and looked at
the display window. She breathed a small sigh of relief, when she saw
it just a text message. Flipping open the phone, she hit the "read"
button to read Willow's message.
TEXT FROM WILLOW: Hey Buff. Where are you? You okay? I think Angel's
out looking for you. Be safe. Love, Willow
Buffy smiled at her friend's text. Then hit "reply" and typed up a
quick response to Willow before sending it.
TEXT FROM BUFFY: I'm okay, Will. Promise. Just need some time to
think. I'll be home in a little bit and I love you too.

Angel followed his gut in his hunt for Buffy. He used their connection
to tap into her. Angel grinned triumphantly as his instincts told him
where to find his wayward girlfriend. She was at the beach. Their
beach, as she'd once dubbed it. He turned into the parking lot and
after turning off the car, climbed out and walked out towards the sand.
*****
She knew he was there without him having to say a word. Buffy hadn't
recognized her bond/connection with Angel when she'd been cowering in
fright and pain behind the dumpster in that alley, back when she was
only 15. She'd sensed him somehow, but there'd been that whole thing
with Hank, so yeah. But as time had passed and she'd come to know and
love Angel, she'd realized that whenever he was in the same vicinity
as her or vice versa, they were aware of each other.
He came over and sat down next to her and she automatically curled
into his side. He kissed her on the top of the head, but continued
maintaining the silent atmosphere she'd created. Buffy looked down to
where their hands were joined and smiled to herself. The little things
they did, like holding hands without even realizing it, were something
she absolutely cherished.
Angel, who'd rested his head on top of hers, without being conscious
of it, couldn't imagine a life without his Buffy in it. Before Buffy,
sure, he was living, but there were so many times he just wanted to
stay in bed and never get out. Nowadays, he wouldn't mind staying in
bed all the time either, as long as Buffy was in bed with him. He
chuckled softly at the idea of he and Buffy staying in bed for a whole
day and night. Maybe even a whole week. Wouldn't that be nice?
"Angel..." Buffy spoke softly, but Angel's preternatural hearing could
hear her just fine. "...I don't know if I can..." she swallowed hard,
and wondered how the hell she could spit it all out. Buffy took a
calming breath and tried again.
"Angel...I love you and our family so much it hurts sometimes. And I
shudder to think what would've and could've happened if Hank had found
me that night. If you'd never come along and saved my life." Buffy
turned to face him. "I never thought I could love anyone, well, like a
woman in love with a man kind of love. But you proved me wrong and
that's not a bad thing by any means." She grinned for a second and
gave him a quick kiss on the lips. "And I know you gave me a ring. An
engagement ring no less. And I'm sorry I've been unable to give you an
answer yet." She worried her lower lip and frowned while sorting
through what else she wanted to tell Angel.
"I don't think I'm...I can't give you an answer yet. Still. And..."
Buffy gazed up at him as tears began trickling down her face. "I'm so
so-rry A-Angel," she wailed, bursting into tears and wrapping herself
around him as Angel pulled her into his arms and held her tightly,
just letting her cry, while occasionally rubbing her back in a
soothing motion.
**********
A few days later, Buffy was in Willow's room chatting with her about
this and that. When she casually mentioned that Angel had "popped the
question", Willow squealed excitedly and demanded to see the ring.
Buffy went into her room and got the engagement ring and brought it
back to Willow's room for the redhead's approval. Willow squealed
again and gasped at the gorgeousness of Buffy's ring. Who knew Angel
had such good taste in jewelry?
"So he REALLY asked you to marry him? And he picked this killer rock
out himself? When did he ask you? What was your answer? When's the
wedding?" Willow fired the questions at Buffy in rapid fire
succession. Buffy grinned.
"Yes he asked me to marry him. On my birthday last month. Yes he
picked out my ring by himself, and my answer is still undecided. As
for a wedding, well, that kinda depends on my answer to Angel's
proposal, huh?" Buffy smiled, then sighed and lay down, putting her
head in Willow's lap. Willow sighed too and petted Buffy's hair
soothingly. "I'm just so confused, Wills. I love him more than
anything and that should be way more than enough of a reason to marry
him...right?"
"Yeah. You two are so in love and into each other, it's nauseating at
times. So what's the prob, Buffy?" Willow asked, still running her
hand over Buffy's blond hair.
"I don't know, Willow...I just don't." Buffy sighed again and wished
some magic fairy or genie would come tell her what she should do. "I
*should* just say "HELL YES!" and jump him, y'know? But something's
holding me back...only I have no idea what it is that's keeping me
from putting Angel's ring on and announcing our engagement to
everyone." She groaned and buried her face into Willow's lap even
further. Willow just giggled and kept petting Buffy's hair.
"Try not to stress too much, okay Buff? You know as well as I do, that
things always have a way of working themselves out. Why don't you talk
to Angel about your worries?" Buffy looked up at Willow, horrified.
"Or...ya know...not," Willow quickly amended.
Buffy groaned and sighed again, then got up from Willow's bed and took
herself (and her ring) back into her room. She flopped down onto her
and Angel's bed and curled into a small little ball, clutching Angel's
pillow to her tightly. That's how Angel found her half an hour later,
she was fast asleep, still a tiny ball on the bed, with a deathgrip on
his pillow. He was struck, for what was probably the millioneth time,
by how beautiful she was. And by how young and fragile she looked,
especially when sleeping. He noticed that the ring box was open and
laying next to her, but that the ring itself wasn't in it.
Where was her ring, Angel couldn't help but wonder. Was she wearing
it? Had she dropped it somewhere? Or, god forbid, had she...no, she
would never do something so cruel as to throw his ring away. Angel
swallowed a couple of times to calm down, before climbing onto the bed
next to her and pulling her to him. She smiled in her sleep, and
curled into his arms, drifting deeper into slumber. He was still
holding her, when a few minutes later, she moaned and started
twitching and dreaming.
Angel quickly deduced that Buffy was having a nightmare, when she
moaned again and started fighting whatever it was that was giving her
the nightmare. She kicked and struggled and he let her go, lest either
one of them get hurt accidentally. Buffy screamed suddenly, and sat up
in bed, staring straight ahead. Angel was afraid she was still in the
throes of the bad dream, so he just sat there next to her helplessly.
In a couple of seconds, Buffy seemed to calm down and she fell back
onto the bed, sleeping peacefully once again. Angel remained sitting
there, confused as hell as to what had just happened. He kissed her
forehead, then started sliding off the bed, when her eyes opened and
she said his name softly. Angel scooted back over to her and Buffy
crawled over him until she lay fully on top of her man. She bent down
to kiss him slowly, causing them both to moan happily.
Angel pulled her closer and flipped them so he was on top. She giggled
and they began a game of tonsil-hockey. Husky growls from Angel and
throaty purrs from Buffy filled their bedroom as their kisses grew
more heated and passionate.
*******
**knock, knock**
Angel groaned at the interruption. He and Buffy had been kissing for a while, when someone knocked on their bedroom door. Buffy pouted, but let Angel get up to see who was at the door. Fred stood there, looking embarrassed.
"Uh, hi guys. Sorry for interrupting, but Wes needs to see you downstairs, Angel. He and Giles say they've got something really important they need to discuss with you." she smiled briefly, as Angel passed her and headed down the stairs to meet with Wes & Giles.
Buffy looked at Fred curiously, but Fred wouldn't say anything to her. Buffy shrugged and started following Angel, only to be stopped by her friend.
"What's going on, Fred? What do Giles and Wes want with Angel?" Buffy asked, waiting for an answer.
"I honestly don't know, Buffy. They wouldn't tell me anything, so your guess is as good as mine."
"Oh...okay. Um, well, do you think I could talk to you about something? Something I don't wanna discuss with anyone else, I mean," the blonde asked, somewhat shyly.
"Of course, Buffy!" Fred replied, then came into the room all the way and closed the door behind her. Buffy smiled and led the way into the sitting room.
After the two girls were comfortable in their chosen seats, Fred waited patiently for Buffy to speak.
"So...I..." Buffy grasped for the words she wanted, "AngelproposedtomelastmonthonmybirthdayandIdon'tknowwhattodo!" she finally blurted out all in one breath.
"What?" Fred asked, smiling and confused.
"Angel proposed to me last month on my birthday and I don't know what to do."
"Wow. Congrats, Buffy!" Fred grinned excitedly.
Buffy shrugged and smiled in response.
"And what do you mean you don't know what to do? You mean about accepting his proposal or what?"
Buffy nodded, then said, "But there's more..."
"Okay, like what?"
Buffy sighed and knew this would be a little bit harder to talk about.
"I'm...stillavirgin. I...want to marry Angel, more than anything, but I'm still unsure about stuff. Like...sex stuff..."
Fred sat there quietly, really surprised. Not about the proposal, cos they'd all been waiting for that, but that Buffy was still a virgin. She'd been Angel's girlfriend since she was 17 and Fred kinda figured that Angel and Buffy had become lovers by now.
"So you're still a...y'know...and you wanna know about sex? From me?" Fred questioned her friend.
Buffy nodded and waited.
"Buffy...I know it's like *so* not my place to ask, but I'm gonna anyway, and feel free to tell me to mind my own beeswax, I just wanna know how you're still a virgin...especially the way you and Angel are all over each other sometimes." Fred grinned at the last part of her statement. More than once, she or one of the others at the hotel, has walked in on Buffy and Angel making out.
Buffy blushed and grinned back at Fred.
"Well, like, you know what it was like for me with...Hank and stuff. Angel has always been insistant that whatever he and I do, kissing and the like, is up to me. We've always gone at my pace and stuck with the things I'm comfortable with. And...we've done "sex" stuff, but n-not all the way. Like, well, yeah...and now I just wanna know more. About what it's like the first time and everything."
Fred didn't know how to respond. Buffy wanted Fred, to tell her, about sex? Why her?
"Um...well...okay. What, specifically, did you wanna know?"
"Does it...hurt? And if it does, then how much?" Buffy asked eagerly.
"It does, yeah. But how much or how little it hurts, depends on how ready you are. Like, how...um...turned on a girl is," Fred stammered.
"Okay...so if a girl isn't turned on at all, then it would hurt the worst. If she's turned on a lot, then it might not hurt at all?" Fred nodded, relieved Buffy had figured out what Fred had been trying to tell her.
"I...I asked Angel what sex was like once, right after we'd started dating, when he was "Angelus", but he didn't tell me much, though he did mention people sometimes use food during sex." Buffy blushed and looked at the floor. Fred blushed, too.
Buffy sat there deep in thought, wondering what else to ask Fred. Just then, Angel came back upstairs and into the room.
Buffy and Fred both looked up and smiled at him.
"Everything okay, Angel?" Fred asked the man.
"Yeah, everything's fine. Giles and Wes just wanted to run something by me. You two ready for dinner?" he replied, looking at both girls.
They nodded in unison, then headed down to the dining room, with Angel right behind them.
*******
After dinner, Wes and Giles went back into Wes's office to finish their earlier discussion. Buffy was extremely curious about what they'd been talking about with Angel, so she figured she'd follow them and then eavesdrop outside the office door. Unfortunately for her, Angel took her by the hand and dragged her into the den to watch a movie with him.
"So what're we gonna watch, Angel?" she asked, after sitting down on the loveseat.
"Well, that depends...what are you in the mood for, Sweetie?" he replied, smiling at her.
Buffy smiled back at him and gave him a saucy wink. He laughed and then gestured to the huge collection of movies they(the whole A.I. crew) had accumulated over the years.
She sighed and got up, walked over to Angel and kissed him quickly, then grabbed the movie "Love Actually" and tossed it to him. He rolled his eyes when she turned away from him. This movie was a favorite of hers(SAME WITH THE AUTHOR!!! :D ) and he figured Buffy had seen it at least 10 times. Angel smiled to himself as he put the movie in and went over to where Buffy was sitting. He picked her up off the loveseat and then sat down with her on his lap. She sighed in contentment and settled in to watch the movie with her guy.
*******
That night, after Buffy and Angel had settled into bed, Buffy decided to ask Angel about his "secret" talk with Giles and Wes earlier in the day, again. She also wanted to talk some more about his marriage proposal, but she didn't feel ready yet. He was on his back, with her next to him, lying on his right side, her head on his shoulder, and his arm around her holding her close.
"Angel?"
"Yes, Buffy?"
They turned to look at each other and she took a moment to compose her thoughts.
"I was just wondering when and if you were gonna tell me what you talked about with Wes and Giles tonight before dinner," she replied.
He sat up, dislodging her from her spot, softly laughing at her look of disgruntlement. Angel sobered as he decided if he should tell Buffy anything or not. And if he *did*, then what should he tell her and what shouldn't he tell her? Buffy, now sitting up and facing her boyfriend, waited with growing impatience for him to let her know what was going on. Finally Angel seemed to come to some sort of conclusion and looked over to her.
"Tonight when Giles and Wes and I were talking in Wes' office, well...let's just say I'm not at liberty to tell you what the three of us talked about. I want to get more information together, before..." he started saying, before Buffy cut him off mid-sentence.
"What do you mean you're not 'at liberty', Angel? I thought you and I told each other everything...I know *I* don't have anything I haven't told you about. So what's the deal? Why won't you tell me what you and Giles and Wes talked about?" Buffy asked, getting upset at his refusal to open up to her.
Angel sighed and ran his hand through his hair as he struggled to tell Buffy what she wanted to know.
"Buffy...it's not just *my* decision whether to tell you about my discussion with the others or not. Giles and Wes asked me to keep our chat from you and everyone else a secret for now. And I'm not going to go behind their backs just so you can have the answers you want," he replied, somewhat testily. He got up from the bed and stood there trying to calm down.
Buffy was taken aback at Angel's sudden outburst. He was very seldomly angry and especially not with her. Usually, if she asked him something, he'd tell her without any holding back on his part. So why couldn't he tell her this? She crawled across the bed and got up to stand next to him. Taking his hand in hers, she tugged on it until he looked down at her.
"Angel...," Buffy said softly, "...I didn't mean to make you mad...or upset you. I just really wanted to know what you guys talked about. But I can respect the fact that you can't tell me without Wes and Giles giving you the okay. Let's just go to bed and when you're able to tell me, you will...right?" She gave him a hopeful look and he nodded, then helped her back into bed, and after a few lengthy kisses, they said their goodnights and went to sleep.
*******
A few days later, Giles and Angel were having a heated discussion in Angel's office.
"Rupert, I can't keep Buffy in the dark about this. She has a right to know that her...that Hank has contacted us and asked us to set up a meeting between the two of them. That he's gone through rehab and counseling." Angel sighed and put his head in his hands, then looked at his friend.
Giles agreed with Angel that Buffy *should* know about Hank's phone call and about Hank wanting to be reunited with her.
"I agree that Buffy should know about the latest...development with Hank. However, I'm not sure that her finding out, would be all that conducive to her well-being. Granted, it's been three years since she last saw him...and in that time, she's grown into a remarkable young woman. Secure in her life here with us, and you..." Giles hesitated to say anymore.
"But you're still slightly worried that seeing him will bring back everything she went through at his hands, aren't you?" Angel asked. Giles nodded and wondered what they were going to do.
"She saw him when she was 17, you know...when the two of us were on our first date. We'd just finished dinner and at her suggestion, had driven to the beach. And while we were walking on the sand, she literally tripped over his drunken self. He was his usual charming self, but Buffy handled it quite beautifully, and knocked him on his ass. It was extremely funny and though we never talked about it, I think it definitely helped her some," Angel said, smiling in remembrance.
Giles chuckled softly. "I think I'd have liked seeing that a lot."
Angel grinned for a second, then frowned in thought, as he recalled Hank's words on the beach to his daughter. Giles wondered why Angel had suddenly gotten so solemn looking.
"Angel, is everything all right?"
"Well, actually I'm not sure. Right before Buffy kicked Hank's butt, he mentioned something about having her...let's just say, "pleasure", him with her mouth for the first time when she was twelve. Naturally that shocked her and me both. I never pressed the issue, though. In fact, none of us have ever actually asked her what he put her through. But then, we never really wanted to know, did we? Shortly after she came here, maybe a month or so into her coming to live at the hotel, Fred and the other girls, had a pajama party and invited Buffy.
She was having a lot of fun with them, but I guess they were playing some sort of game, and Cordy and Faith, started making out. It really upset Buffy, and she fled to the courtyard, where I found her. She was hysterical, but able to tell me, roughly what had happened, and about an incident where Hank had been watching a girl-on-girl movie. He'd forced Buffy to watch it with him. When she'd tried to leave, since the movie was making her sick, he made her touch him," Angel swallowed hard, trying to keep from being sick himself.
"Essentially, she was forced to "pleasure" him with her fist, then she was made to clean up his mess with her..." Angel couldn't finish his sentence, but instead left the office to go punch out his disgust and anger, down in the gym.
Giles watched him go and felt like joining him. How on earth, could they even consider letting Hank ever see Buffy again? And would it be wise to question Buffy fully, about her life with Hank? He sighed heavily, then went to find his girlfriend for a quick snuggle. After his talk with Angel, he definitely needed cheering up.
*******
Buffy was in her and Angel's sitting room, lounging on the loveseat. In her hand, or rather on it, was the ring her boyfriend had given her. To accept or not to accept...that was the question. It sure did look and feel right on her hand. She sighed and took the ring off, placing it back in its' box on the coffee table in front of her. Arg. Why was it so hard for her to either reject or accept his proposal?
What could be holding her back? She loved him completely and he loved her completely. They were so good together in every way. So what was wrong with her? Maybe she couldn't give him an answer yet, because of...no. Buffy refused to think that her inability to accept Angel's proposal, could have ANYthing to do with Hank. Why would it?
She'd never forgotten what he'd done to her. NEVER. And she'd never forgotten what he'd said to her on the beach three years ago, about her getting him off for the first time when she was only twelve. Why didn't she remember what he was talking about? Was he even telling the truth? *Had* he made her do...stuff...to him when she was only twelve? If so, then what had she been forced to do?
Buffy got up and began pacing, her mind playing movies of her early childhood. Birthday parties, ice-skating lessons, days at the gallery with her mom, shopping trips with her mom, holidays, school events, and other happy things. Where was her dad in this movie, though? Buffy's mind continued going through memories of her life, until it just suddenly stopped at the first time her mom had had to go away for the weekend. Buffy remembered saying goodbye to Joyce and hugging and kissing her, too. She vaguely remembered coming into the house and saying something to her dad.
Oh yeah, that's right. She'd asked him what they'd planned on doing while her mom was gone. He'd said something Buffy didn't remember, then she'd gone upstairs to her room. What had happened next, though?
As Buffy finished pacing and sat down to try and recall what had happened that weekend, there was a knock on the door. She sighed at the interruption, but told whoever it was to come in.
"Hello, Buffy," Giles said warmly, as he came into the room and took a seat across from her.
"Hey Giles, how're you?" she asked, smiling at him. He returned the smile, then wondered how he was going to tell her what he'd come for.
"I'm fine, thank you."
Buffy could tell he wanted to say something else, so she waited patiently. Finally after a few minutes, Giles managed to find his words.
"Buffy...I was...um...I was wondering if perhaps you'd be willing or able, to tell me a bit more about your, um, life before coming to live here at the hotel."
Woah, Buffy thought, where had *that* come from?
"Okay, where'd that line of thought come from, Giles? You've never, none of you, have ever asked me about life with Hank. And that was fine by me, obviously. I was in no condition to talk about anything like that when I was new to living here. So why are you suddenly I-Wanna-Know-About-Buffy's-Past Guy?" she asked, quite curious about Giles' motives, if he had any, for wanting to know about her childhood.
Bugger. Now he had to come up with a reason, other than "Hank wanting to meet with her", for asking about her past.
"Well actually Buffy, I think we've all been a bit curious about what your life was like growing up. We just never wanted to accidentally upset you or anything, so we never really asked before now. Naturally you don't have to tell us, me, anything you don't want to."
"I know I don't, Giles. And I wouldn't mind talking about my past, I just...I guess I'm kinda scared. Y'know? I...I think something happened when I was twelve, something with Hank, but I can't remember. Is...is there a way I can find out? Like a spell or hypnosis?" Buffy looked at him, hopeful and kind of worried.
"Buffy, I suppose I could find a spell or we could try hypnosis. However, you and I should discuss this with Angel and Wesley, don't you think?"
After a few seconds of thinking about it, she shook her head. "No. If something *did* happen to me when I was twelve, I don't want anyone, specifically Angel, to know about it, unless I come out and tell him. As for Wes, I'll decide if I want him to know or not."
Giles looked at her thoughtfully. "All right, Buffy. I'll see what I can do. Why don't you meet me in my office in an hour and we'll discuss our options?"
"Okay Giles...and thanks." She stood up when he did, then they hugged and he left the room.
********
Giles went straight to his office and shut the door behind him. What was he going to do? His first instinct was to go to Angel and Wes, to clue them in on what he'd discussed with Buffy. But he didn't want to do anything that might jeopardize his close friendship with her. Nor did he want to mess up his friendship with Wes or Angel. He sighed, then went over and sat behind his desk.
....TO BE CONTINUED!!!!! ;D
