***********************
It was Sunday. And once again, he was spending the day alone. Glancing around
his empty apartment, Giles sighed sadly. Why was he still in Sunnydale? It's
not as if Buffy even needed him or wanted him around. She had Xander, Willow,
and the others. They could research and help her train, just as easily as he
could. He was just a pathetic, old, has-been Watcher. Hell, Wesley, who had
also been a Watcher, was at least gainfully employed. Even if Wesley *was*
working for Angel.
Angel. Now there was an unpleasant bevy of memories better left alone.
Ensouled vampire, former lover of The Slayer. Angel leaving Buffy, had probably
been the best thing to do. Although, at the time, Buffy truly felt as if she would
perish. However nowadays, she was so wrapped up in everything *but* Angel.
Giles doubted if Buffy even had any sort of contact with Angel.
Giles exhaled and left the empty apartment. He walked down the street, and
noticed families gathered around dining room tables. Ah, family dinners. Quite
the norm for a Sunday evening. Giles missed them, a lot. He hadn't sat down to
a Sunday Family Dinner, in at least 30 years. And that was back before Ripper
and Ethan. Before his mum had passed away. Giles was just Rupert, back then.
His mum, dad, three younger sisters, and he, would all gather 'round the large
oak dining room table. It had been a wedding present to his mother's father.
And since his mother had been the eldest in her family, she'd inherited it when
her father had passed away.
He briefly wondered what had happened to the table. After his mother had
died, his sisters had been shipped off to various relatives. Giles had met
Ethan, and the rest was well known. His father hadn't been heard from or seen at all,
after making sure Giles' sisters were being cared for. So Giles realized that
he missed a few things. Sunday family dinners, his sisters, his mother, and
the Merriam Family dining room table.
As he continued walking, he discovered that he was mere minutes from 1630
Rivello Drive. Buffy's house. Groaning softly, Giles cursed his one-track mind.
Giving into temptation, he knocked on the front door. But after a few moments,
realized that nobody was home. It figured, really. Buffy didn't have time for
anyone or anything, let alone her own house and family.
Giles walked back home and after unlocking his front door, went inside. The
place was as deserted as it had been earlier. He made a light supper of soup
and crackers, with a pot of tea.It was barely nine o'clock when he dragged himself upstairs. After getting ready for bed, Giles tucked himself in. Maybe tonight wouldn't be filled with dreams of Buffy.
Giles was almost completely alseep, when he realized one more thing he missed
from England. His Superman collection....yes, Superman wasn't British, but Giles had still collected everything he'd been able to. His collection, he supposed, had gone
the way of the dining room table. Never to be seen again. Perhaps some things
are better left alone.
