***************

Buffy Summers, formally known as *The* Slayer, was currently browsing an apartment guide. She needed a place to live. Dawn was in New York with their dad; Giles, Willow, and Xander...had moved to Texas; and Faith and the other Slayers were where a Hellmouth was currently trying to open. So Buffy was alone for the first time, since, well, she'd run away after sending Angel....but, we won't rehash that. Everyone knows what happened to Angel...and what happened to Buffy while he was gone.

She was actually really excited to be getting her own place with her own bedroom and bathroom. She had money from Giles...well, The Council of Watchers, to be more exact. It seems that 18 months after The Council had been blown up and Sunnydale was no more, Giles had received startling news from a grandson of a former Watcher. The Council had been placing money into a Swiss Bank Account for the Slayer, for the last four years. Which meant that Buffy, was practically wealthy. Giles had immediately informed Buffy of the news, and Buffy immediately decided that she would never touch any "dirty" Council money.

It took Giles three weeks to convince Buffy that the money had never been touched by Quentin Travers and that Quentin, had never even *known* about the money that was put aside for her. Buffy finally agreed to accept the money, but only if Faith got some of it. Giles assured her that Faith would get her own account right away. Faith was even more reluctant to take money from The Council *and* from Buffy; so Giles and Buffy decided to open an account in Faith's name anyway, just in case Faith ever came around.

***************

While Buffy looked for apartments in L.A., Angel was in the Post Office.....why the Post Office? Because that's where The Oracles were located. And why was he visiting The Oracles? Because he had a heartbeat.

Okay, I know humans are *supposed* to have beating hearts, but Angel wasn't human...or at least he hadn't been human an hour before going to see The Oracles.

"Why are you here, lowly mortal?" the female Oracle asked.

"Because I need to know why I have a heartbeat," Angel replied.

"Simple, you are human now," the male stated.

"If I’m human, then why am I....?" Angel began, before dropping to the ground. He was overcome by the sudden need to breathe.

"Never mind," he finished a few moments later.

***************

Angel left The Oracles and headed back to the motel he'd been living in, and he automatically wanted to call Buffy to tell her he'd become human. But as he reached for the phone...he began wondering if she was ready to be baked. As in, ready to be in a relationship with him, again. If she wasn't, he didn't want to pressure her into anything...so he called her on her cell and left her a message.

***************

Two hours and six apartments later, Buffy finally got around to checking her cell phone messages. She was kind of surprised--in a good way--to find one from Angel.

::Message from Angel::
"Hi, it's Angel...and, well....God I hate leaving messages... Ok, I have something to tell you, and I think it's kind of important. Ibecamehumanthisafternoon. Bye!"
::End of Message::

Buffy took the phone away from her ear, looked at it like it had grown a head, then replayed the message. After re-hearing it, she couldn't believe what he'd said...all in one breath. He became human this afternoon...he was human...Angel...human. She wasn't sure what to think, I mean yeah, Angel was human...no risk of losing his soul, *ever*. Babies, a house with a white picket fence, marriage...and not necessarily in that order, either. But she didn't know if she was ready to be cookies yet. She suddenly had her whole life in front of her...and didn't have a clue what she was going to do with it.

Sighing, she decided to call him back...if for no other reason, then to let him know she'd gotten his message...right?

***************

Angel was sitting on the couch in his two-bedroom apartment, wondering how Buffy would react to his message. He half hoped and half feared, that she'd call him back...and that she still wouldn't want to be with him. Sighing in boredom, he turned on his TV to see if there was anything on, that would be worth watching. Just as he was getting interested in an episode of "History's Mysteries", his cell phone rang.

"Hello?"

There was silence on the other end, and he thought maybe it was a wrong number or something...but then he heard a faint sound, like someone taking a deep breath.

"Hello, is someone there?" he asked.

" ...Hi...it's me...," she said.

"Buffy? Hey...," he replied.

"Hey...um...well, I got your message...and I would've called back sooner, but I was apartment hunting."

"Oh, okay...do you...want to, um...meet somewhere for dinner or something?" Angel asked.

"Okay...where should we meet?" Buffy replied.

"Well, where are you?" he questioned.

"142nd and Umpqua...near Graceland Bowling Alley..." she said.

"Okay, I know where that is, I'm only a few blocks away from there...want to meet at the Chinese place on the corner?" He suggested.

"The one on 149th and Umpqua? Sure, we can meet there...in, say, half an hour?" Buffy answered.

He agreed, and they ended their call.

***************

She showered and changed for her dinner date...the whole time wondering if it really *was* a date...as in a non-platonic kinda thing. Grabbing her purse and keys, she left her motel room and headed to meet Angel.

***************

When Angel walked into the restaurant, he immediately saw Buffy sitting in a booth towards the back. He headed towards her, with one hand behind his back. She smiled when she saw him, and as he got to her booth, he took his hand out from behind his back, giving her the rose he'd been holding.

"Oh, thank you, Angel!" she grinned and stood to kiss him on the cheek.

He blushed and gave her a hug, then sat down across from her. They took the menus from their waiter and then took a few minutes to decide what to eat. Buffy was trying to think of what to talk to Angel about, and he was trying to think of what to talk to *her* about. Neither one of them could think of any "safe" topics to discuss, so they just avoided talking all together. When the waiter came back, Buffy ordered Kung Pao Chicken; Angel ordered Moo Shu Pork. After ordering, they smiled shyly at one another, and Buffy feared that the whole date would be spent in silence.

Finally, she couldn't take the quiet anymore, and spoke.

"So...is it just me or is this the most pathetic date ever? Here we are, having known each other for six years and counting, yet neither one of us can think of anything to talk about."

He chuckled, then nodded his agreement at her assessment.

"Yep, it’s pretty lame that we can't find anything to talk about. I suppose we could talk about the weather?"

She rolled her eyes, then laughed

.

"Um, well, it was gorgeous out today, but, um, now it's dark...so the weather's not much of a topic to talk about anymore."

He frowned and as he tried to think of something *else* to talk about, their dinners were brought to their table. They thanked the waiter, then started eating. He used chop sticks while she used a fork.

"How long have you known how to use those?" she asked in between bites.

"Used what? The chop sticks?" he asked.

Buffy nodded.

"Since last month," he admitted sheepishly.

Her mouth gaped open and then she started laughing. He laughed too, then showed her how to use the chop sticks before they both finished their dinners.

***************

Angel paid for the meal, then grabbed two fortune cookies on their way out of the restaurant. He handed one to Buffy and broke open his own.

She opened hers; when she read the fortune, she snickered in amusement.

"What's so funny, Buffy?"

"My......fortune......"

"Why is it so funny? What's it say?"

She managed to stop laughing long enough to read it to him.

"It says, 'You will have good luck...between the sheets.' "

His eyes bugged out, and he swore he hadn't heard the fortune right.

"What?!? It doesn't say 'between the sheets'! Does it??"

"Here, read it for yourself, Angel."

He grabbed it and read it...then gave her a dirty look.

"I was right, it doesn't say anything about *sheets*!"

Buffy ignored his look, then grabbed *his* fortune, leaving hers with him.

"Ooh, this one says, 'Be wary of tall, dark, and handsome men...between the sheets.' "

"You're pulling my leg, right? Because if *yours* doesn't mention 'sheets', then neither does *mine*!" he told her, taking his fortune and giving hers back.

"Well, before I explain the whole 'sheets' thing, is there something you wanna tell me? About 'tall, dark, and handsome men', Angel?" she replied, fighting to keep her facial expression neutral.

"Nope, not a thing, Buffy...but maybe we should switch fortunes."

"Nah, I like mine...but back to the 'between the sheets' thing? Willow and Xander and Giles and I, would always add 'between the sheets' to our fortunes, whenever we'd order Chinese, while having all-night research parties."

"Ah, okay...so, you're going to have good luck, between the sheets. Hmm..."

"What?"

"I was just thinking something..."

"What were you thinking about, Angel?"

He mumbled his response, but it was too low for Buffy to hear it, even with Slayer hearing. She grabbed his arm, and made him stop walking, so she could ask him what he'd said. But before she could make him repeat himself, he leaned down and kissed her gently on the lips.

***************

Buffy froze when she felt his lips on hers, but then she began kissing him back eagerly. A few more kisses later, they both pulled away to catch their breath. Then they held each other's hand and walked slowly back to Buffy's place. Their walk was mostly filled with comfortable silence and the occasional kiss or two.

***************

When they arrived at her door, she turned to face him, and they smiled at each other. Then she invited him in for a cup of coffee. He unlocked the door for her, and she went inside with him right behind her. Buffy walked into the kitchenette, and after turning on the light, she found the coffee grounds and put the necessary amount into the coffee maker. Then she lead him into the living room. They sat down on the couch, and neither one of them was sure about what to talk about now. Finally, a few seconds later...

"So, now would be a *great* time to ask you yet another lame question...how do you like your coffee, Angel?"

He chuckled, then took her hand and laced their fingers together.

"I haven't had coffee in a while...so I'm not sure how I like it anymore. How do you like yours?"

THE END(???)
